Margaret Cheung - singer and dancer
Margaret is a freelance singer, actor, director, teacher, casting director and theatre practitioner with over 30 years of performing experience. She has lectured at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, International Academy for Film and TV, Hong Kong Art School, Hong Kong Institute of Education, Hong Kong City University SCOPE’s Project Yi Jin and many secondary schools in Hong Kong. As a versatile musical theatre performer and drama educator, Margaret took to flamenco’s theatricality naturally and began studying the dance form in 2005 at Felah-Mengus Flamenco Workshop under Rico Cheung in Hong Kong. Since then she has studied with flamenco artists from all over the world including Manuel Betanzos, Omayra Amaya, Simone Pope, Tomas Arroquero, Angeles Gabaldon, Maria Bermudez, Francine Sweet, Jose Galván and many others. She met Maestro Oscar Nieto in Vancouver 2006 and was introduced to por fiesta, an improvisational and interactive flamenco form between singer, dancer, palmista (clapping) and musician that is popular in party setting and as a finale in flamenco performances. Ever since, she has committed herself to a deeper understanding of flamenco and began studying cante (flamenco singing). She gave her first performance as a cantaora (female flamenco singer) in 2012. Committed to the growth and development of flamenco knowledge in Hong Kong, she runs study groups in por fiesta, dedicating herself in sharing her flamenco knowledge to the next generation of flamenco aficionados (enthusiasts). Margaret has a professional doctorate degree from Queensland University of Technology, and a masters degree in drama education from Griffith University.
